The countdown to Christmas is upon us.
Gift guides are everywhere!!
I don’t partake in gift giving or celebrating this time of year, but it is the season for gift guides. You can read a post I recently wrote to hopefully help others who don’t “do” the holiday season here. Whether or not you partake in the holiday celebrations, it is important to take care of yourself this time of year because it is the usual time when everybody gets sick.
Since it seems like everybody is posting gift guides, and I want to get in on the fun, I have created a gift guide for YOU! Give yourself the gift of health this year. Decide you want to be a healthier, happier person by caring for your body and listening to your inner voice. I have just the things to get you started! If you do want to give the gift of health to a loved one, these are great ideas to share as well.
Some of the links here are affiliate links. This means that I may get paid a small amount by the affiliate at no additional cost to you
if you choose to make a purchase.
Onto the guide….
First of all, I have to spout off my excitement that I recently started using essential oils. I’d been thinking about it for a long time, not sure what company to go with, and just being very indecisive. The stars aligned in November and my partner had started talking about using oils for our pet business and the cleaning business he is starting. I had started looking at them for a few weeks, and then one Saturday we stopped at an animal rescue event and met a Young Living representative. Turns out she and I had a lot in common with our own health journeys and we just clicked. So, I joined Young Living and am love love LOVING learning about the oils and how many ways they can be used to benefit my home and health. So, my very first recommendation for giving yourself a gift of health would be to do some research about switching out household products you currently use for non-toxic products made with essential oils, and then go get yourself a Young Living Starter kit!!!! If you want to join right now, and use my link below, I will send you a Pocket Essential Oils Reference guide and some other information about how to use your oils. You will also get access to a number of awesome Facebook groups that are all about sharing the oily lifestyle and supporting each member in the health and/or business journeys.
My own health journey started when I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition’s health coaching program. Health is so much more than just exercising and eating right. IIN teaches that all of our “primary foods” must be in order for us to really be healthy. You can learn more about this idea in the book Integrative Nutrition written by the founder of IIN, Joshua Rosenthal.
A healthy mind is as important as a healthy body. Learning how to relax and de-stress is very valuable for lowering the cortisol hormone that causes us to be “fat.” I’m an expert sleeper, naps and bedtime are two of my favorite times of day! It is also important to relax the mind when you are awake also. Meditation is great, or even just sitting somewhere quiet for a few minutes and focusing on breathing. A book that I have found helpful to understand the value of meditation is Wherever You Go There You Are Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life by Jon Kabat-Zin.
Having music often helps the mind ease into quietness also. I have a CD similar to this one that has music and guided meditation.
As I was looking through items to include for meditation, I found one I am going to purchase for myself soon! I’ll have to keep it out of reach of the pets though, as I can see them thinking it is for them: A meditation pillow! I can already feel myself getting more excited to sit and do a quiet session once I have this lovely pillow and can begin to regularly use it as part of a relaxing, inspirational ritual.
Of course eating more fruit and vegetables is always recommended when you are on the journey towards greater health. Smoothies, juices and salads are all great ways to get more vegetables and fruit into your diet. If you can only have one machine to help you utilize vegetables and fruit, I would recommend this Ninja System. It has a large blender, a personal blender, a food processor and a veggie spiralizer. You can make smoothies, chop veggies for salads and soups, and make veggie noodles. So many ways to get the goodness of plants into your tummy!
Exercise is important in being healthy. Even if you just get in the habit of taking a walk in the morning and in the evening each day, you will be improving your health. Start small if you aren’t used to any activity, 10 minutes each time. Slowly build up to 30 minutes each time. Increase your pace as you get stronger. Make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes!
If you don’t want to walk and prefer to stay in your house, there are a number of free videos on You Tube and other subscription based sites with tons of different workouts, from yoga to line dancing and everything in between. Personally, I go to thrift stores or Amazon to find deals on DVD’s. Since everyone is using the internet for their exercise, there are lots of DVD’s floating around out there for very little monies. Here are some of the ones I have and love:
Richard Simmons…how can you not love him! Doing these workouts always gets me in a good mood! This collection of Sweatin’ To the Oldies will get you, well, sweatin’ to the oldies and hopefully smiling while doing it!
Belly Dance is a lovely way to get your feminine groove on while also getting some exercise. I actually have a secret belly dance costume in my closet, someday I dream of being good enough and confident enough to perform in public! This beginning bellydance one by Veena and Neena gives a good foundation to start. They have other more advanced dvd’s also if you get really into the groove!
Do people still Zumba? I don’t know if anybody else does, but I love it! Whenever exercising can be fun and more like play, I’m all in! This collection of Zumba dvd’s and gear is a great way to get your blood pumping and your toes tapping.
This isn’t a dvd, but a portable Yoga card deck that can be in your purse at all times. It’s easy to mix and match cards to make a different workout each time.
That’s all I have for now. I hope this guide gives you some gift ideas for yourself, or for a loved one who wants to start living a healthy lifestyle. Small steps can lead to great leaps, and taking our health back is so important!
I love to hear from you. If you have any ideas for healthy gifts, or if you have a list of healthy “wants” for your own list, post a comment below!
